How I Manage My Time as a New Dad

February 2, 2025

Hey there đź‘‹,

Parenthood changes everything, including how you manage your time.

Today, I want to share how I’ve adapted my productivity approach after becoming a dad.

Previously, we’ve explored productivity methods like:

  • The Daily Highlight: Simplifying your day with one key focus.
  • Time Blocking: Giving every hour a job.
  • Ideal Week/Year: Structuring your time around long-term goals.

These methods worked great… until I became a parent.

Suddenly, everything went out the window. My productivity tanked, and I found myself frustrated. But then, I asked myself:

How can I get things done now that my priorities have shifted?

Parenthood is not just inevitable, it’s a beautiful, chaotic, and happy part of life (even with all the challenges). But I had to accept something hard: none of my old methods were working anymore.

What Finally Worked

You know what saved me? Simplicity and acceptance.

Here’s what I realized:

A Simple To-Do List: I started listing everything I wanted to accomplish for the week. Not daily. Not hourly. Just a weekly to-do list.

Acceptance of a New Pace: I stopped expecting to operate at the same speed as before. Instead of aiming to “get everything done,” my new goal became: make progress.

Focus on Moving Forward: With my to-do list, I’d prioritize tasks and cross them off one by one, knowing that any progress, no matter how small, was a win.

The Secret Sauce

What really changed the game was learning to use small windows of time.

Parenthood often gives you unpredictable chunks of time: 10 minutes here, 20 minutes there. Instead of waiting for perfect 2-3 hour blocks, I started using those moments to:

  • Write a quick paragraph.
  • Send that email.
  • Plan my next steps.

It’s not glamorous, but it works.

A Day in My Life

Here’s what a typical day looks like:

Family First: I prioritize spending and enjoying time with my family.

Work in the Gaps: During nap times or small windows of opportunity, I get things done.

It’s not perfect, but progress over perfection is the mantra now.

💡Pro tip for busy Parents: Stop waiting for the “perfect” block of time. Use those short windows to chip away at your tasks. Over time, those small wins add up.

Parenthood has taught me to adapt, simplify, and focus on what matters. It’s not about doing everything, it’s about doing something.

And honestly? That mindset has made all the difference.

How do you manage your time as a parent (or a busy person in general)? I’d love to hear your strategies!

Cheers, 🍻

Lucien
